Tombeaux pour Carlos

Carlos left us this week. 

If you are reading this blog, or enjoying our listening session, in many ways you owe Carlos a debt of gratitude.  When I met him over 30 years ago, he invited me into what was, for me, a somewhat novel concept – regularly gathering friends with the express purpose of listening to music.  Making the experience even more special, the music in question was also transformative and quite new as well – early music on period instruments. 

Today, in a vastly different world, we are replicating that experience virtually.  And I like to think that your enjoyment as you discover or revisit some of these beautiful pieces is similar to what I used to feel in Carlos’ living room all those years ago.

Carlos had a weakness for the viola da gamba, and was a big fan of the plucked string.  So I selected this set of “Tombeaux” which I think he would have enjoyed.

Wikipedia says that “a tombeau is a musical composition commemorating the death of a notable individual.” 

Notable is right.  Rest in peace, my dear friend.

Carlos nos dejó esta semana.

Si estás leyendo este blog o disfrutando de nuestra sesión, tenés indirectamente una deuda de gratitud con Carlos.  Cuando lo conocí hace más de 30 años, Carlos me invitó a participar de lo que para mí era un concepto novedoso: reunir amigos en forma regular y sistemática con el propósito de escuchar música.  Para hacer la experiencia aún más especial, la música en cuestión era también nueva y transformadora: música antigua en instrumentos de época.

Hoy, en un mundo muy diferente, estamos replicando virtualmente esa experiencia. Y me gusta pensar que tu disfrute al descubrir o volver sobre algunas de estas hermosas piezas es similar a lo que yo solía sentir en el living de Carlos hace tantos años.

Carlos tenía debilidad por la viola da gamba y la cuerda tañida. Con eso en mente seleccioné estos «Tombeaux», que estoy seguro habría disfrutado.

Wikipedia dice que «un tombeau es una composición musical que conmemora la muerte de un individuo notable».

Ciertamente notable. Descansa en paz, querido amigo.
